Fazendo o melhor da vida na morte: qualidade de vida, processo de morrer e cuidados paliativos

Resumo

Este artigo discute o processo de construção de “qualidade de vida” para sujeitos enfermos em professo de morrer. Apresento cenas etnográficas de atendimentos feitos por uma equipe de assistência domiciliar de um hospital público do Rio de Janeiro, que opera com enfoque de cuidados paliativos. Tal modelo de assistência visa proporcionar “qualidade de vida” pelo controle de sintomas e pela atenção ao paciente e aos familiares enquanto seres multidimensionais (biológicos, psíquicos, espirituais e sociais). Argumento que a “qualidade de vida” é construída em arranjos de cuidado nos quais responsabilidades, afetos e narrativas circulam e são distribuídos. Para esse fim, define-se o que é “normal” para o corpo adoecido, quem pode falar sobre ele, e quem é capaz de lidar com suas sensações e sintomas. Nas relações que circundam e atravessam o corpo adoecido, assimetrias de poder e desigualdades socioeconômicas modulam as possibilidades de se ter uma vida com qualidade rumo a uma “boa morte”.
