Abstract

The republican polymath Marcus Terentius Varro was considered in his time as "the most
learned of the Romans." Nevertheless, he endured decades of obscurity and only in recent years has he
become a subject of interest within the academic community. Our work is part of this wave of research
that finds in Varro a significant potential contribution to the studies of ancient erudition. This study
aims to identify Varro's interpretation of cosmology as applied to agriculture and the management of
agricultural lands. Through Varro's intellectual activities, we seek to characterize the Late Republic as
a stage of intense intellectual and scientific production. Our reading of our source, De Re Rustica, will
follow the approach presented by Liba Taub, who recognizes various ancient literary genres as
potential scientific communicators.
