Abstract

Memory had great relevance in ancient Rome, and the cultural memory of the urbs was commemorated and consolidated in monuments, inscriptions, speeches and in rituals, such as triumphs and public funerals. In the late-Republican period, an aristocratic funeral presented to the city the achievements of the bereaved family through an intricate sequence of rites, articulating the aristocratic memory with the cultural memory of Rome. Public rituals such as aristocratic funerals, by involving different groups, created common references that, under certain conditions, were articulated in different ways. This article addresses the appropriation of elements from the aristocratic funeral and its connection with other references to memory at the P. Clodius Pulcher’s funeral in 52 BC.
