Abstract

What is the relationship between philosophy and national reality? What is the meaning of talking about a “Brazilian” philosophy? In order to answer these questions, we will seek to examine the dilemmas involving the possibility of an “authentic” philosophy in Brazil and the ways in which Gerd Bornheim, in his text “Philosophy and National Reality”, seeks to resolve such impasses. Showing how the colonial situation imposes specific challenges to philosophical production in Brazil, by using an eminently dialectical procedure, Bornheim provides us with some ways to deal with the tension between the claim for universality that marks the history of philosophy and the singular character of the Brazilian social formation.
