Abstract

This article proposes to analyze how the work of the teacher, rapper, writer and former domestic worker Joyce da Silva Fernandes, better known as Preta-Rara, especially from the Facebook page “I Domestic Worker”, contributes to the self-definition off female workers housework, based on the concept of feminist author Patricia Hill Collins. In addition to supporting the hypothesis that this self-representation is essential to awaken a transformative awareness in these women, this article argues that domestic workers, even as subalterns, can indeed speak, in the sense of reacting to the system of domination that oppresses them. For this, the present work dialogues with the activists Gayatri Spivak and Grada Kilomba to deepen the debate in relation to an issue dear to both authors: can subalterns speak?
