Abstract

The main objective of this article is to investigate the iconographic representations of the globe and their meanings in coinage produced in the Roman Republic. To this end, a set of coins dating from the 1st century BC, minted in Rome in different sociopolitical contexts, was selected; all the objects feature the image of the terrestrial globe. This provides an expanded perspective on how the Romans developed an iconographic repertoire based on the Greek notion of oikoumene, which facilitated the idealization of dominance over the inhabited world. By examining the iconography on the coins, it is possible to understand how the Romans appropriated this concept in various contexts with the aim of monumentalizing the discourse of conquest and control over the spatial realm considered oikoumene or the inhabited world.
