Abstract

The text analyzes the interaction between religion and politics in Baixada Fluminense during the dictatorial period. Initially, the political and social contexts of the region before and after the 1964 coup are explored. Then, the role of the Diocese of Nova Iguaçu under the bishopric of Dom Adriano Hypólito, who took a critical stance in relation to the dictatorial regime, is highlighted. The liturgical pamphlet A Folha and other forms of resistance developed by the
Diocese over the years are also discussed, as well as the violent responses by the military forces.
