Abstract

The article presents an analysis of Helmut Newton’s work, built upon a scene experienced behind the scenes of a fashion photoshoot. The author argues that Newton is more of a director of mise-en-scène than a photographer, a context in which the photographic shot can be understood as the capture of the apex of the mise-en-scène, of a carefully orchestrated staging. Consequently, the fascinating images of Newton’s universe are equally disturbing, as they lead the viewer to experience the pleasure of their own fantasies, as Freud suggested, without sparing them the shame that accompanies such enjoyment.
