Abstract

Between the 1st and 4th centuries CE, ecclesiastical leaders from different regions of the Roman Empire engaged in discussions and efforts to systematize the Christian calendar, with the aim of consolidating the dates for religious festivals, particularly Easter. In light of the conflicts between various Christian intellectual circles that characterized this period, a variety of knowledge about the cosmos and mathematical calculations were mobilized and utilized. Thus, the present article seeks to understand the process of establishing the Paschal computation and its significance for the liturgical calendar. To this end, the descriptions of Paschal cycles developed during the 3rd century CE, as presented in the Ecclesiastical History of Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea, written in the 4th century CE, will be analyzed.
