Abstract

This article proposes an interdisciplinary reading of the novel Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoevsky, through the lens of Civilization and Its Discontents, by Sigmund Freud. Taking Raskolnikov as the embodiment of the tension between drive and repression, the analysis investigates how guilt operates not merely as a psychic symptom but as an ethical and narrative axis of modern subjectivity. The discussion is expanded by authors such as Paul Ricoeur, Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Emmanuel Levinas, and Søren Kierkegaard, bringing together literature, psychoanalysis, and moral philosophy. The article concludes that discontent is not a flaw in culture, but the condition of ethical subjectivity — and that Raskolnikov’s journey reveals both the burden of repression and the possibility of meaning.
