This article seeks to understand the phenomenon of drug addiction in the consumer society as a symptom in the social field, which reveals a failure in the consumer society. It addresses the place that the drug has assumed throughout the discursive changes present in history, highlighting the status of a commodity that it gains in contemporary times, through the bias of the society of consumers; as well as the modality of jouissance present in drug addiction, presenting it as something that escapes the phallic logic, articulating itself to the jouissance of the Other. Finally, it is argued that the mode of enjoyment in drug addiction points to a failure in the consumption society, when the subject, instead of consuming the drug, is consumed by it.
