Ensino de música em uma escola paulista no período de 1870 a 1920: inovação e competência pedagógica

Resumo

 Resumo: Este artigo é resultado da pesquisa realizada durante o período de doutoramento na FE-USP (Faculdade de Educação – Universidade de São Paulo), intitulada “Igreja e Escola na perspectiva das práticas musicais em colégios históricos americanos de confissão protestante (São Paulo: 1870-1920)”, que buscou compreender a atividade musical nas escolas americanas de confissão protestante, em São Paulo, no final do Império e primeiros anos da República. O principal objetivo desta publicação é focalizar a presença da música em uma dessas escolas, a Escola Americana de São Paulo, hoje Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, observando como se estabeleceu em São Paulo, como eram os seus professores, bem como conhecer as práticas musicais, o ensino de música nesta escola e a contribuição desta instituição à realidade educacional da época. As inovações da pedagogia americana serviram de referencial para outros países e foram trazidas para o Brasil no final do século XIX pelas escolas americanas de confissão protestante. A educação escolar nos aspectos institucional, de prática pedagógica e de cultura escolar tem sido objeto de estudos na área de História da Educação Brasileira. Com nossa pesquisa foi possível realizar um movimento de aproximação da História da Educação com a História da Educação Musical, visto que a História da Educação Musical no período citado é um campo particularmente fértil, por não ter sido suficientemente estudada.

Music education in a school in São Paulo from 1870 to 1920: innovation and pedagogical expertise

Abstract: This article is the result of research conducted during the doctorate program at FE-USP (Education University – São Paulo University) titled “The church and the school from the perspective of musical practices in historic American schools of Protestant profession (São Paulo: 1870 – 1920). The study sought to understand musical activity carried out in American Protestant schools, in the city of São Paulo during the period comprised by the end of the Portuguese empire and the beginning of the Brazilian Republic. The primary goal of the current study is to address the presence of music in one of these schools, namely A Escola Americana de São Paulo (The American School of São Paulo), currently known as Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (Mackenzie Presbyterian University); seeking to examine how it came to be established in São Paulo, gathering facts about its faculty,  musical practices as well as the teaching of music in that school and the contribution offered by this institution to the educational scenario of that period. Innovations provided by the American pedagogy served as reference points to other countries and were brought to Brazil at the end of the nineteenth century by American Protestant schools. School education, as it concerns its institutional aspects, pedagogical practices and school culture, has been the object of studies in the field of the History of Brazilian Education. The current research has aided in making possible the connection between the History of Education and the History of Music Education. The History of Music Education during the aforementioned period has not been thoroughly studied which renders it a particularly fertile field of studies.
