PASSAGE TO VIRTUALITY
MUTATIONS OF THE SOUND ARCHIVE AND ITS USERS
Keywords:
sound archive, virtual environment, final user, sound file, screenAbstract
The article discusses some of the consequences of sound archive virtualization for research. With this purpose, I discuss a moment of archiving that I call “download fever”, the commercial music distribution through a continuous flow system called streaming, the ubiquity of the sound file, the empowerment that the end user acquires through the screen and the boundaries between institutional and non-institutional archives. Finally, I refer to a state of drift which the archive acquires when uploading in the virtual environment, and the need to rethink the new conditions of research in that environment.
