Abstract

The article investigates listening as an object of discourse, analyzing the positions of the artist and the listener through the conceptual formulations and artistic practices associated with sound ecology. We begin with a historical analysis to understand how formulations concerning listening emerged through the distancing between different musical roles. The study then unfolds through an analysis of three complementary strands of academic literature. We begin with the formulations of Murray Schafer and his contemporaries at Simon Fraser University, with the aim of situating the concept of the soundscape. Next, we turn to critiques focused on the epistemological, conceptual, and archaeological aspects of the term, emphasizing its limits and problematics. Finally, we analyze artistic practices historically linked to the concept, such as soundwalks and soundscape compositions, which are examined through discourse control procedures and the concept of the dispositif. We hope that the analysis developed throughout the article will help us understand some of the historical conditions of possibility that enabled the emergence of sound ecology, as well as the power relations produced by the discourses related to these practices.
