The ghost of glory (and revenge) and narrative anticipation strategies in Apollonius of Rhodes' Argonautica

The appearance of the ghost of the hero Sthenelus in the epic poem "Argonautica" by Apollonius of Rhodes initially appears to be just another event among the various ones that make up the typical exotic tableau of compositions by scholars from the Hellenistic Period. However, a deeper analysis of the scene and its implications – as well as its relationship with another significant event in the work – demonstrates how the poet employs the ghost as a sophisticated narrative tool in the poem, pointing not only to what will be narrated within it, but also to the implications for the tragedy of Jason and Medea, as narrated by Euripides and many others. In this way, through the translation of the passage and the analysis of various symbols and references, we propose to demonstrate how Sthenelus's ghost functions as a narrative anticipation strategy for the events in the epic poem, as well as one of the various resources that explore the cyclical nature of this poetic genre and the myths that underlie it.
