Abstract

The essay focuses on the biography of the colonial administrator Theophilus Shepstone (1817-1893), with an emphasis on his involvement with the “native question” in Colony of Natal during mid-19th century, on his involvement with the ceremonies for crowning of Cetshwayo, the Zulu inkosi in the 1870s, and the colonial discourse elaborated in The Zulus, an article published in 1875 at the Cape Monthly Magazine. Through a dialogue with historiography on the subject, this analysis focuses on the colonialist strategies adopted by Shepstone in his political practices and discourses, especially uses of the past and appropriation of elements of African political history, as well as the Zulus' initiatives and resistances in part of these processes.
