Abstract

Written in the late 1760s, The Hissope was enshrined in the history of Portuguese literature for its supposed revolutionary character by intellectuals such as Almeida Garrett, Camilo Castelo-Branco, Ferdinand Denis, Joaquim Manuel Pinheiro Chagas and Teófilo Braga throughout the 19th century. However, the recognition given to the work does not apply to the author, António Dinis da Cruz e Silva, who often divided the opinion of intellectuals due to the legal functions he exercised in Portugal and Brazil throughout his life. This article aims to understand the analysis of the poem and its author in Brazil and how this moved a dialogue between Brazilian and Portuguese intellectuals through literary and journalistic publications that took place in the first half of the 20th century.
