Abstract

This article aims to discuss the social construction of old age in Brazil, based on a survey of some historical reports that contribute to the analysis of the evolution of life expectancy. Thus, it is intended to raise aspects of the domination of the elderly body in a historically unequal society. There is also a survey on the praise referred to the elderly, as a way to exemplify their desired social place and the way they see themselves in marking their identity and positioning in relation to other age groups. It is concluded that its productivity position manages to overcome the criticism about physical factors that mark the representation of old age.
