O ANNUARIO ESTATISTICO DO BRAZIL (1908-1912) E AS BIBLIOTECAS NO DISTRITO FEDERAL

The aim of this work is to present statistical data on libraries in the brazilian Federal District, which are included in the Statistical Yearbook of Brazil (1908-1912): 1st year: vol. III: Cults, Assistance, Repression and Instruction published in 1927 by the General Directorate of Statistics. With this, we intend to contribute to the History of Libraries in Rio de Janeiro, so that it is possible to learn about the existing libraries at the beginning of the republican regime and to visualize their development over the years worked by the publication. We do not intend here to exhaust the presentation of the data, but rather to show its existence as the first survey of its kind carried out in Brazil (as far as is known) and to use them for some reflections. To this end, we pondered briefly on the Yearbook itself, libraries and society, on the Brazilian data and, mainly, the data regarding the Federal District present in the same document.
