Abstract

During the 19th century in Brazil, the practice of breastfeeding and the first care of newborns were carried out by enslaved wet nurses. In this work, some photographs of wet nurses will be analyzed, reflecting on their motherhood, the stereotype of the “Mammy”, the cultural contributions of these women, relating the authors Gilberto Freyre, Lélia González, Patrícia Hill Collins, Mariana Muaze. From this perspective, it will be demonstrated how the photographs of these wet nurses formed passive resistance, a term coined by Lélia Gonzaléz, either by her posture in front of the camera, or by elements brought in her clothing.
