Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the historical trajectory and socio-cultural impact of the Palmeira Clube between 1985 and 1995, an institution of significant importance to the black community in the city of Ituiutaba in Minas Gerais. The main problem of this research is to investigate the relationship established between the members associated with the Palmeira Clube and the strategies used to configure this space, transformed into a place for identity formation and the promotion of afro-brazilian culture in Ituiutaba. Putting into perspective the academic production on black social clubs in Brazil, the struggle of the community and leaders for recognition of these clubs as historical and cultural heritage and the occupation of these spaces, as an anthropological and social place, as a representative stage of the community in the face of territorial tensions and disputes. Correlating them to the various forms and conditions of struggle and confrontation, perpetuated over decades of fight and resistance, linked to these clubs that have been re-signified as places of belonging and safeguarding Afro-Brazilian culture and traditions.
