JONGO DE PIANO: PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTION AND INTERPRETATION OF A PIANO ARRANGEMENT BY THE JONGO PRETA VELHA JONGUEIRA

The objective of this work is the presentation of my process of construction of the solo piano arrangement of the jongo Preta Velha Jongueira, by Lazir Sinval, as well as the demonstration of the paths followed for the elaboration of its interpretation. In this way, I carried out a research on the elements that characterize Jongo, which started from the following premises: pianists who intend to approach the Afro-Brazilian piano must know in depth the instruments that give voice to the genre they intend to represent, in a to be able to transpose, to the keys, all the rhythmic and sound richness that characterizes him; Jongo is an Afro-Brazilian cultural manifestation with idiosyncrasies that require a methodology that respects and embraces them, with the roda being the space for true learning; and African-based music is characterized by a phenomenon of circularity that is contemplated through the concept of clave, which is the smallest rhythmic portion that defines a rhythm. In this way, I transcribed the beats of the drums of Jongo da Serrinha (caxambu, candongueiro and tambu), of the clapping, and of two dance steps (tabeado and limp). Once these elements were known, I translated them to the piano, considering its technical-instrumental resources (touch, keyboard fingering, use of pedals). Finally, I presented my jongo arrangement for piano, as well as my interpretation for it. In the future, it will be important to enrich the score with more elements that provide interpretive paths for other pianists to play.
