Abstract

The goal of this paper is to describe in which way the relationship between the narrator/protagonist and the act of naming the world, in Samuel Beckett’s First Love, can question the act itself, therefore highlighting a crisis which undermines the role of language as an instrument capable of attributing meaning to the world. Starting from Bruno Clément’s discussion about the status of language in Beckett’s universe, as well as some thoughts on the characteristics of Beckett’s rhetoric, we will make a critical analysis of key moments in First Love; at the end, we shall see how the instability of the world becomes the instability of language itself.
