Abstract

Social exclusion can be defined as the systematic prohibition of the availability of rights, resources and opportunities, hence the need for and importance of developing spaces with universal accessibility. According to the World Bank, 1 billion people have some type of disability, therefore, the tourism sector is forced to incorporate actions to transform its offer as inclusive, not only based on the fact that tourism in itself is a right, but considering that it is an opportunity to move towards international standards of quality, sustainability and consequently competitiveness. Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco is a semi-planned mature destination in the Mexican Pacific that during 2023 received 6.04 million visitors and that has remained in taste and preference as a beach destination. Under this context, the present work aims to carry out a diagnosis accessibility in the tourist area. The methodological process used consisted of a theoretical review, identifying inclusion and tourism as elements that link the study. Regarding the field work, sheets were designed based on criteria and requirements of Wandering, Apprehension, Location and Communication by their acronym (DALCO) that allowed us to identify and quantify the degree of accessibility using the Likert scale combining emoticons and colors (traffic light), the direct observation method was used. To approach the destination, the tourist part was divided into five large zones (Romantic Zone; Downtown Zone, Hotel Zone; The Marina; Airport Area and Bus Station). Initially, the following spaces were evaluated: 1.- public areas (Malecón), 2.- restaurants, 3.- bars, 4.- Bus Station, and 5.- Airport. The evidence indicates that the destination presents areas of opportunity for its transformation as an inclusive destination, one that is capable of diversifying its offer and, on the other hand, improving its competitiveness indicators.
