Abstract

This article investigates political emotions as central elements in the constitution of power relations in the Middle Ages, with an emphasis on their symbolic, ritual, and performative articulation. The central hypothesis is that emotions not only express individual states but operate as regulated social practices that legitimize authorities, mobilize loyalties, and structure collective identities. The secondary hypothesis maintains that these emotions are historically constructed and culturally codified, constituting true "emotional regimes." Drawing on the contributions of authors such as William Reddy, Barbara Rosenwein, and Marc Bloch, the study proposes that understanding emotions allows access to the invisible gears of medieval politics. By analyzing royal ceremonies, religious practices, and cultural productions, such as the Cantigas de Santa Maria, the text demonstrates that affects like fear, jubilation, and devotion were not merely consequences of power structures but also active tools for their reproduction and contestation. The objective is to reinforce the relevance of the history of emotions as an indispensable interpretive key for medieval political studies.
