Three works on the history of the northwest region of Rio de Janeiro, more specifically Laje do Muriaé (RJ), highlight that an Italian musician named Giuseppe Masini arrived in the locality in the second half of the 19th century, coming from Rio de Janeiro, and that he would have completely modified the local culture. In this paper, we analyze the presence of the Italian musician and the narrative of this presence as indicators of coloniality. We note that the process of bourgeois modernization of Lajense society was driven by the economic rise of the region, especially from the coffee plantations, but also by the presence of music based on a courtly model of European origin, whose impact had perennial reflections on the musical thought of the region and its surroundings
