OS DESAFIOS DA PRODUÇÃO MUSICAL HAITIANA EM SÃO PAULO COM BASE NO CASO DA BIGUP#1

Migração, Haiti, Produção Musical, Diáspora, São PauloAbstract
This article offers an ethnomusicological analysis of Haitian musical production in the city of São Paulo through the case study of BigUp#1, a band formed by Haitian migrants dedicated mainly to konpa, a popular Haitian dance music style. Through participatory ethnographic research in which I acted as the group’s second guitarist in 2021 and interviews with band members, I direct the analysis to questions about how the production of a Haitian musical group in the city of São Paulo connects to broader sociocultural issues of the Haitian diaspora in Brazil, mainly those related to the “ordinary temporariness” (Fernandes and Pachi 2021) that makes up the daily lives of this population, the lack of spaces and opportunities for the development of cultural activities, and the transience and difficulty of maintaining musical projects. Additionally, I analyze how such musical (and cultural) production efforts demonstrate an understanding of culture as a resource (Yúdice 2003) on the part of my interlocutors, through the mobilization of music as a way of providing entertainment for the Haitian community and seeking greater connections with the local society.
