Between musical genres and sociopolitical formations
A semiolinguistic analysis of MPB, Rap and Pop songs

This article explores how MPB (Brazilian Popular Music), Rap, and Pop reproduce sociopolitical discourses. Here, music is understood as an important vehicle for cultural expression, capable of reflecting social and historical contexts, but with variations in approaches that seem to follow certain patterns defined by musical genre segmentation. There are different characteristics, levels of engagement, purposes, and audiences. By invoking sociopolitical discourses – both verbally, through lyrics, and through sonority – an artist is expected to dialogue with the social identity encompassed by the musical genre to which they are linked. Thus, through discursive staging, they will reinforce the accepted imaginary within their group. The text briefly reflects on the interrelation of the concepts of musical genre, discursive genre, and identity, then develops a comparative analysis between three songs: "Sou eu que vou trabalhar" (MPB); "Ponto de vista" (Rap); "Deixa o coração falar" (Pop). Based on Charaudeau's Semiolinguistic theory, it seeks, through the analysis of the restrictive elements of communication acts, to determine similarities and differences in the treatment of sociopolitical issues.
