FLUID ORCHESTRATION IN BANJO-KAZOOIE
INSTRUMENTAL INTERACTIVITY IN VIDEO GAME MUSIC

This article investigates how the soundtrack of the video game Banjo-Kazooie features a fluid orchestration system, in which the musical material adapts in real time to the player's actions and the environments explored during the game. The object of analysis is the piece Gruntilda's Lair, the game's central theme, and its multiple instrumental variations, each associated with a specific event accessed from the antagonist's castle-maze. It is argued that these variations are not a simple reproduction of the instrumentation used in the original themes of the corresponding stages, but operate as reconfigurations of the Gruntilda’s Lair theme, maintaining its melodic and harmonic identity while adapting the orchestration to evoke extramusical elements characteristic of each game environment. The musical flow in this game takes on a fluid nature, since it is a constituent element of a work in movement (Eco, 1976), revealing a process of musical construction that is organized through the continuous adaptation of its instrumental content. It can be concluded that the music of Banjo-Kazooie functions as a metaphor for the character's location, guiding the listener and enhancing immersion through interactive, comical, and contextualized listening.
