Objective: To assess professionals' knowledge of recommended practices for environmental hygiene in the operating room. Method: A cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, carried out in a surgical center. Nursing professionals and cleaners were included to fill in a questionnaire containing questions about standard precautions, specific precautions and environmental hygiene practices in the operating room. Results: A total of 57 professionals answered the questionnaire. The average correct scores were 76.30 for the nursing professionals and 58.33 for the cleaners. There was a low frequency of training on the subject, weaknesses in knowledge about the use of Personal Protective Equipment, the definition of frequently touched surfaces and the sequence of operating room decontamination. Conclusion: The discrepancy between the knowledge scores highlights the need to establish clear protocols and carry out specific training for all categories of professionals involved in environmental hygiene.
