Transgenerational relationship between the environment and childhood play
perceptions of quilombola grandparents

Objective: to describe the perceptions of quilombola grandparents on the transgenerational relationship between the environment and childhood play. Method: qualitative research conducted in 2023 in northeastern Brazil with 22 quilombolas grandparents. Interviews were coded, resulting in five thematic categories in NVivo. Project approved by the Ethics Committee. Results: The categories revealed perceptions about Play in the past: the free relationship with the environment; Environmental and social transformations: impacts on play between generations; Risks of illness when playing in a polluted environment; Play across generations: continuities and ruptures; Play as a tool for bringing generations together. Final considerations: Play undergoes changes due to environmental and social influences. The findings contribute to the understanding of the interfaces between childhood, environment, and quilombola culture, and reinforce the importance of traditional knowledge for the promotion and protection of childhood.
