Social Determinants of Health in people living in rural areas

Objective: to analyze the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) of people living in rural areas. Methodology: a quantitative study was conducted with 259 adults and elderly individuals enrolled in a rural Family Health Strategy (FHS) program in Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected using a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, and subsequently classified according to Dahlgren and Whitehead. Results: regarding proximal determinants, there was a predominance of females (n=151; 58.3%), those aged ≥ 60 years (n=127; 49%), and those of white ethnicity (n=246; 95%). Regarding behaviors and lifestyle, there were chronic diseases (n=153; 59.1%) and continuous medication use (n=171; 66%). Regarding intermediate determinants, the predominance of married individuals (n=175; 67.5%), Catholics (n=239; 92.3%), and seeking care from the Family Health Strategy (n=204; 78.8%) were key determinants. Distal determinants included incomplete primary education (n=75; 29%) and income between 3 and 5 minimum wages (n=123; 47.5%). Conclusion: the health/disease process is permeated by social determinants of health (SDH) that demand intersectoral actions to reduce inequities in access, considering the specificities of rural areas.
