Experiences of incarcerated women regarding the postpartum period and newborn care: qualitative study

Objective: describe the experiences of postpartum women deprived of liberty regarding the postpartum period and newborn care. Method: an exploratory-descriptive qualitative research with a narrative approach was carried out, guided by the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research protocol. The sample included six postpartum women from a prison complex in São Paulo, whose accounts were processed via inductive narrative analysis using the ATLAS.ti software. Results: reveal an ambivalence: incarceration enables access to health previously neglected on the street, but imposes severe emotional barriers. Neonatal care is marked by hypervigilance in a collective environment and by the "tightness in the heart," the anguish of imminent compulsory separation. Final considerations: the postpartum period in the prison system is an extension of the sentence, where breastfeeding is experienced as a prolonged farewell. Ensuring humanized care is an ethical imperative to reduce inequalities and fulfill the 2030 Agenda.
