THE INFLUENCE OF THE LUNAR CYCLE IN LABOR AND LOW-RISK DELIVERY

The objective was to identify the relationship between the phases of the moon and the onset of labor in parturients attended at a maternity hospital with usual risk. This is a cross-sectional study, with retrospective data collection from a high-risk maternity hospital in Curitiba, Paraná, in 2018. Data were collected between March and May 2021 and statistically analyzed. A total of 1,963 hospitalizations were analyzed, predominantly women between 20 and 29 years old (58.5%), primigravidae (41.4%), with 39 weeks of gestation (25.9%), vaginal delivery (87.4%), assisted by physicians (44.2%) and obstetric nurses (43.6%). The highest number of hospitalizations was in the Last Quarter (26.5%); no significant differences were found between the number of hospitalizations on moon phase change days in relation to other days (p= 0.942). The lack of relationship between the lunar phases and the onset of labor helps to reveal popular beliefs about pregnancy and childbirth.
