Introduction: Dating violence represents a serious public health problem, manifesting through gender power imbalances that result in violent acts, particularly against women. Objectives: To identify dating violence in young female university students and discuss the experienced forms of violence. Materials and Methods: Descriptive, exploratory, and qualitative study involving 50 female university students aged 19 to 24 who reported being in a relationship with a man or woman for a minimum of 6 months. Participants were enrolled in a public university in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted from July 2018 to February 2019. Data analysis was performed through thematic analysis. Results: The majority of participants were of mixed or black race, had a religious affiliation, and identified as heterosexual. Of the total participants, 39 reported experiencing some form of dating violence perpetrated by men. Psychological violence was most commonly reported, followed by moral, physical, sexual, and financial violence. Discussion: Female university students are not exempt from experiencing gender-based violence in dating relationships. This situation emphasizes the importance of debunking myths and stereotypes about this stage in a couple's relationship. Conclusion: Dating violence in university students is a reality rooted in patriarchal structures, leading to negative repercussions on the health and academic lives of young women. There is a need to promote prevention and intervention actions against gender-based violence within the university environment.
