Relationship between nutrition and cognitive changes in community-dwelling elderly in a municipality in paraná

Objective: to investigate and relate the eating routine and cognitive status of elderly people. Method: This is a descriptive and analytical study carried out with a group of elderly people enrolled in the Basic Health Unit (UBS) Cidade Alta in the municipality of Maringá. Collection took place from May to June 2024, through a semi-structured interview in four segments: sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), adapted Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and open questionnaire on understanding food choice and the relationship with memory. Result: Greater cognitive changes were identified in women with low education, income above the minimum wage and multiple chronic diseases. However, elderly people between 70-79 years old showed preserved cognition. The low consumption of neuroprotective foods reflects a lack of knowledge about the relationship between diet and cognition. Conclusion: that educational strategies and the implementation of the diets studied are essential to promote cognitive health and prevent deficits in long-lived populations.
