Objective: to evaluate the visual acuity of students enrolled in a public school in the city of Macaé, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Method: cross-sectional study, with an analysis approach. A total of 221 schools aged between six and 14 years old participated in the research. Fisher's Exact Test and Pearson's were tested. Results: the highest proportions of students with visual acuity results were identified in the first year of the same shift (31.58%), followed by the third year of the same shift (27.27%). It was evidenced that if a suggestive sign of a visual problem is identified, the greater the possibility of the student having low visual acuity. The proportion of students undergoing retest in the morning and afternoon turns is the same. Conclusion: Although most students had normal visual acuity, a portion had altered values, which reinforces the importance of eye health in schoolchildren.
