Objective: To evaluate the knowledge of family caregivers of elderly people with Alzheimer's disease dementia at any stage of progression. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted at the Brazilian Alzheimer's Association, Pará section. The sample consisted of 30 family caregivers of elderly people with Alzheimer's disease dementia. Two instruments were used: a sociodemographic/clinical questionnaire and the Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Scale. Data analysis was performed using the parametric ANOVA test and the non-parametric Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: There was a predominance of female caregivers, with a mean age of 56.8 years. Regarding knowledge about Alzheimer's disease, the average score was satisfactory (21.2). In the distribution of means, the highest score was in the domain "Development and progression of the disease" (4.5 ± 1.30) and the lowest in "Being a caregiver" (2.6 ± 1.09). Conclusion: the knowledge of family caregivers about Alzheimer's disease was adequate, corroborating that continuous and personalized educational actions improve the effectiveness of the care provided.
