Mental health of adolescents in primary care: multicenter study with nurses

ABSTRACT
Objective: to analyze knowledge, barriers and experiences related to the promotion of mental health of adolescents, from the perspective of nurses of the Primary Health Care of Brazil and Portugal. Method: multicenter research with a qualitative approach. Data were collected from 54 nurses through a focus group. Results: two categories emerged: 1) perceptions about mental health care for adolescents in primary care - need to improve adolescent care, accessibility and care conditions; 2) barriers to adolescent mental health care in primary care – adolescents' access to health services, insufficient training of professionals, lack of resources and investments, and lack of interest and management. Conclusion: the study reveals the urgency of optimizing care, increasing accessibility and care conditions, as well as developing skills to welcome, communicate and listen to adolescents in primary care services.
