Child growth and development: nurses perspectives on strengths and weaknesses in childcare consultations

Objective: To identify the strengths and weaknesses experienced by nurses during child care consultations regarding child growth and development. Method: Descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, between September and October 2024, with 14 nurses who perform child care consultations. The responses were audio-recorded and fully transcribed, and data were analyzed using content analysis, in the categorical modality. Results: Two main categories were identified: weaknesses in the assessment of child growth and development, and strengths in the assessment of child growth and development. Final considerations: Identified weaknesses include the social vulnerability of families and the lack of knowledge about child development milestones; identified strengths include the bond between health professionals and families, the strategic role of community health workers, and the Primeira Infância Melhor program.
