Who funds nursing research? A longitudinal profile of CNPq funding in Brazil (2005–2025)

Objective: to analyze the profile of funding granted by CNPq for nursing research from 2005 to 2025. Methodology: a longitudinal, quantitative documentary study using secondary data extracted from the CNPq Panel for the Promotion of Science, Technology, and Innovation, covering 17,726 records of grants awarded to the field of nursing. Results: CNPq allocated R$ 291,058,146.81 to nursing, representing a nominal increase of 532.2%. Grants were predominantly awarded to female individuals (77.2%) and those self-declared white (49.1%), with a focus on training and researcher fellowships (72.3%), such as undergraduate research initiation (44.5%). A persistent concentration of resources was identified in the Southeast (44.8%) and a lower absolute share in the North (1.4%). Conclusion: funding for nursing is growing, yet marked by persistent regional, gender, and racial/color disparities, which require induction policies committed to equity and the sustainability of science in the field.
