OCCUPATIONAL STRESS, COPING STRATEGIES, AND WELL-BEING IN NURSING PROFESSIONALS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Objective: to analyze the associations between occupational coping, well-being at work, and occupational stress among nurses and nursing technicians at a public pediatric hospital in the Brazilian Amazon. Methodology: a survey study was conducted with 238 nursing professionals, comprising 88 nurses and 150 nursing technicians. Data were collected through a sociodemographic questionnaire, and questionnaires assessing stress, well-being, and coping. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple linear regression with standard errors were employed. Results: there were no differences between categories in total occupational stress and in the dimensions of well-being, and in coping, only avoidance differed. Stress was inversely correlated with positive affect (r=-0.359) and accomplishment (r=-0.209) and directly correlated with negative affect (r=0.504). In the final adjusted model, lower positive affect (β=-5.40; 95% CI -8.27 to -2.54) and higher negative affect (β=7.50; 95% CI 4.57 to 10.43) remained associated with greater occupational stress. Conclusion: affective dimensions of well-being showed a more consistent association with stress than occupational category and coping.
